Paper #4: Paulo Freire’s “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education”

Due Date: Monday, 11/13 by 6pm in the class wiki

Problem-posing education, according to Freire, “sets itself the task of demythologizing”; it “stimulates true reflection and action”; it allows students to be “engaged in inquiry and creative transformation.” These are grand and powerful phrases, and it is interesting to consider what they might mean if applied to the work to a course in reading and writing.

If the object for study were Freire’s essay, “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education,” what would Freire (or a teacher determined to adapt his practices) ask students to do with the essay? What writing assignment might he set for his students? Prepare that assignment, or a set of questions or guidelines or instructions (or whatever) that Freire might prepare for his class. Once you’ve prepared the writing assignment, write that essay that you think would best fulfill it. If you have any questions about this assignment, let me know in the comments.

I don’t really understand this assignment. What is the question we are answering when writing our essay? What exactly is the essay actually about? I’m confused…

    Stephanie,

You are being asked to write an essay that you devise. In other words, come up with a writing assignment you think is appropriate for this essay (based on Freire\’s ideas of empowering both students and teachers), and then write that an essay based on your own assignment. Make sense?

In my learning about problem posing education, I believe that it is the process of two people, whom are equally teachers and students, discuss a topic that is easily debatable, for example…the argument between Democrats being a better political view or Republicans being the better of the two. In this essay we are supposed to make up and write, is it basically a discussional essay?

    Ryan,

You hold the power here. How can you frame this essay topic to deal with Freire\’s ideas?

What do you mean by a \”discussional essay\”? Be specific? Would this essay you are imagining require you to engage and converse with the Freire\’s ideas -hence brining this ideas into discusssion or question? This would seem to reinforce Freire ideas appropriately, but the question remains: how do you frame this essay to accomplish your goal? The challenge is not so much writing the essay, but framing it appropriately!

Are we supposed to write out the topic we create or simply write the paper? In other words, should we tell you what the question is which we are to answer, or should you simply be able to guess what the question was by reading our essay?

    Kelly,

Yes, please write out your topic specifically and then write the paper.

On the Portal page of the website, it says to turn in the 4th paper by 6 and on the class wiki part in the days assignment page it says by 5?

6 is fine, Krysta. Sorry about the conflicting times.
