The first picture literally shows a woman coming out of a shell. The picture may have a religious meaning to it because it looks similart to other paintings I have seen in religious places. The next picture is a pipe with words underneath that are not English. The pipe has no real meaning to me because I can’t read the writing so I don’t know if there is a reason for it or not. The last picture is one of a soup. The soup makes me think of winter time.
I see a naked woman…covering her…self and a clam shell that she is standing on and some woman in a fancy dress, with these two people hovering over her. In the second one i see a smoking pipe and the third picture is of my favorite soup campbells tomato soup…mmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmm good
I see three pictures in front of me. One is an advertisment for soup, one is a work of art, and the third is a picture of a pipe that states that it is not a pipe.
The work of art is of a woman standing in a shell with people reaching towards her.
The picture of the pipe has a message of some sort because it is clearly an image of a pipe yet the text states that it isn’t.
The third picture is just what it is, an advertisment.
Picture One:
In this i see the legend of the birth of Aprodite, the Greek Goddess. In the center, imerging from the sea ona seashell is Aphrodite herself. To her (Aphrodite’s) left I see the Goddess Demeter, mother Earth, going to robe her. On her right I see what I think is Zeus and Hera- Zeus because he is blowing out what appears to be wind and flowers, to welcome her, and Hera because the woman appears to be curled around Zeus like a wife would be.
Picture Two:
In this I see a pipe with a French caption underneath that appears to say “This is not a pipe”. This just leaves me confused.
Picture Three:
In this I see a drawing of a Campbell’s soup can.
The first one looks to be a mermaid type creature standing on a seashell and covering her private area with other people around her with blankets and flowers floating in th background. It looks like the scene is based at the ocean.
The second photo is of a pipe with some French writing below it. I do not know what it says, but I am assuming that the last two words would be translated “a pipe” in English. It could possibly be an advertisement.
The final photo is a drawing of a world famous Campbell’s soup can. It is tomato soup, that has been condensed. It is a very simple drawing but gather all the main aspects of a typical soup can for this company.
1. Birth of Venus, picture of Venus come out of clam shell, standing between land and see. She is being watched by angels and perhaps some biblical figure. She is being admired.
2.there is a picture of a pipe with some french(?) words underneath, the pipe looks like it is made of shiny wood
I see three works of art. The first painting is a classic, painted a long time ago, visited by generations upon generations, and accepted by all.
The second is a more modern painting with a touch of sarcasm. It is more simple than the first, and I’m sure there are some people who wouldn’t consider it a work of art at all.
The third is a thoroughly modern work of art, by the great Andy Warhol. There are many conservatives and classically-minded people who wouldn’t give this picture the time of day.
But, in simple terms, I see art. Different kinds of art.
I see a beautiful and detailed piece of art that includes a nude woman standing on some kind of a shell - perhaps that of an oyster. She appears to be an angel. The shell she stands on is on top of the ocean. There are flowers blowing about in the air around her. She has gorgeous long blonde hair. There is an island and tree in the background, as well.
Next, I see a picture of a pipe with foreign writing, possibly French, underneath it.
Finally, I see a famous piece of artwork done by Andy Warhol of a Campbell\’s Tomato Soup can. It is very 2-dimensional. Warhol has not tried to develop a 3-D point of view of the can.
These pictures remind me of olden day styles of art. I enjoy looking at this style of pictures, and all of them make me think of a strange idea. I think Walker Pecry\\\’s idea of perspective can really come into play when viewing these pictures. The first one reminds me of the way women were seen as beautiful back in the day, and this reminds me of how our society today wants woment to be a lot skinner than that. The second picture makes me think of old men who like to smoke pipes. The third picture is a classic american food, that was a favorite, and will always be a favorite.
There is a picture of tomato soup can. That is picture also, so that is tomato soup can drawing within picture.
The middle picture is pipe for smoking. Normally, men who taking smoke using that pipe. But that looks like huge pipe.
The first one is main focus of this picture is a woman who is in center on the shell. She looks sad so the other poeple who are in both sides trying to something for her sorrow.
1. I see woman, in her most vulnerable state, representing the voice of innocence in our society. In this image, she is the only light-colored being. On either side of her there are people reaching out to her, perhaps trying to influence her. On her left there are what appear to be angelic beings, and on her left is a woman who looks more like she’s been “turned to the dark side.” The naked woman is in the middle. The natural setting is relevance because this comes right down to the concept of human nature and its good and evil aspects.
2. I see an antique-looking pipe with a French description. It stands out, because it is dark and bold, and it is also the only object in the image. I see something plain, which, through its foreign description and lighting, has been made into something elegant.
3. I see Cambell’s soup. The warm, delectable tomato soup which warms you “heart and soul.” (I believe that is their motto, anyhow). I see a comfort food and a welcome one to most children. I see something which evokes old-fashioned, traditional, comfortable feelings, and my next potential meal.
I see a beautiful image of Venus, the godess of love. There are two gods who are blowing on her and one godess is giving her clothing. Venus has arisen out of the water.
I see a piece of art that contains a mermaid-esc woman standing in a clamshell in the middle of the ocean. This piece of art looks really old. In the second I see a tobacco pipe that has some sort of French caption under it. Finally I see a can of Campbell’s condensed tomato soup that has a real old feel to it.
1. naked woman being born from a clam shell who is being watched and admired by angels and a woman, she is between land and the ocean
2. a pipe made of shiny wood with french (?) words underneath
3. Campbell’s chicken noodle soup that is printed in rich colors and is the only image in the picture
1. Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” depicting how Venus was born and the gods/godesses present.
2. A pipe with a nice yellow background that makes the pipe “pop”.
3. Andy Warhol’s interpretation of Campell’s tomato soup.
In the first picture I see a man and a woman on the left side. In the center there is a naked lady standing on a large shell. To the left there is a lady in a fancy dress with long red hair. They seem to be gods and goddesses of some kind. The background of the picture is an ocean scene with birds and ocean creatures. The second picture I see a brown pipe with a tan background and French writing for the caption, but I do not know what it is saying. I have seen this third picture before, it is a large Cambell’s tomato soup can.
I see three pieces of art that very different, and yet at the same time, very much the same. The first is more a “classic” example of art. It looks as if the people around the woman are worshipping her. The second is a more modern painting of a pipe that, apparently, “not a pipe.” The third is, similiar to all of Andy Warhol’s work, almost like an advertisment for soup.
These images make me think of various art forms. The first image is the Birth of Venus, which I believe is a Brunellesci piece, but I wouldn’t quote me on that one. It’s a fifteenth century image of the creation of the mythological goddess, Venus. The third image reminds me of Warhol’s pop-art Campbell’s soup can. The third image is a French pipe advertisement, or so it seems. The images seem to draw a relationship between art and advertisement; beauty and capitalism.
In the first picture, I see one side of the woman trying to persuade her to cover up her clothes, while on the other side are a man and a woman I guess trying to bring out her sexual side. Since she is confused as to what to do, she covers one breast but leaves the other uncovered. She seems confused about how to express or not express her sexuality. The second image is of a pipe with some foreing language, possibly French, writing something on the bottom. It could be an advertisement, possibly pro-smoking/pro-tobacco? The third is a drawing of a Campbell’s soup can. It looks exactly like a real soup can and is probably saying something about the capitalism in this country.
You have found Jim Groom's English 101 class portal for the Fall, 2006 semester at the University of Mary Washington. The students and I have been experimenting with tools such as blogs and wikis to reimagine virtual learning spaces both in and out of the traditional classroom. Feel free to look around and don't be afraid to leave a comment and tell us what you think.

A naked woman standing in a seashell with long red hair.
A brown pipe: half is light brown the other half is dark brown.
A Campbells Tomatoe Soup can: Top half red, bottom half white. The “o” in “soup” is tilted
